To answer your question directly, what kind? He is a happy working bike, and I love him for it.
To begin with, very generally, it is an extensively modified 1976, Harley Davidson, Superglide, with an S&S motor, and Jim’s 6 speed transmission.
I bought it in 1977 with about 2,000 miles on it, for about the same amount of money, from a guy who made more money than he expected the previous year, and then - it was tax-time. He realized he was not really into getting soaking wet, broiling hot, tooth-chattering cold or fray-edged wind-blown as much as the bike, which either puts-up-with, or is extremely happy in all those conditions.
A telltale sign of “non-biker“ to me, has always been a patch of pant leg melted to the pipes, and this one had a couple of these thick, black, shiny splotches. I love the thought of some guy thinking he looks so cool in one of his favorite pair of artificial-fabric “slacks” (I even hate the word) and eventually realizes that his cuffed white pant leg fluttered on the hot pipes, or more likely, when he got off, he lazily dragged his leg over the hot pipe. That would be even better because then he would smell the stink and while searching for the origin of bad smell, eventually see the new hole in his pretty clean slacks with its melted black accenting edges against white.
Anyway, the world is too much fun, and this happy bike runs way better today than he ever did as a new or stock guy. I think of him as my speed tractor because you can not believe the torque-power he puts out. I smile every time I’m on him...
