The 2012 Reno Air Races. A Photo Essay...with Sound!
For the first time, I recently had the opportunity to attend, and photograph, the Reno Air Races. Having only seen photos in the past, I didn't really know what to expect, visually speaking. However, a job is a job, and I prepared for it like many others, packing what I thought I'd need to make compelling, useable images. I didn't have an assignment per se, but I was provided a media credential through my contacts with a national magazine.
There is a lot going on during the Races. Static displays of antique aircraft, hosted by the National Aviation Heritage Invitational, are a fan favorite, as are the opportunity to get "up close" to one of the racers in "The Pits", or in one of the hangars. The Pits are outdoors, and are the temporary home of the unlimited racers during the week. Color is everywhere, as most of the aircraft are painted with an 8-year-olds palette...and they are stunning.
