World Wide Conflict…
While crafting my book on WWII "bomber jackets," I realized that I wanted to include more than images of jackets and portraits of veterans. I wanted to touch a bit on the scale of the war.
As the son of a Green Beret, my dad and our family was stationed for four years on Okinawa...one of the last and bloodiest battles of WWII.
Having seen remnants of the battle recovered by an EOD team (Explosive Ordnance Disposal...bomb disposal technicians), and played on the actual ground, WWII history was not an abstract concept to me. That being the case, I knew I wanted to include relevant history to further illustrate the air war.
To that end, I searched fruitlessly for a map that would depict the world wide deployment of air forces during the war. Not finding one, I decided to make our own map.
I was a bit surprised to learn that there was a numbered air force in Alaska, the Caribbean, and in India. When one looks at the map as a whole, I think it really does convey the fact that it was a WORLD war, and that air crews served in all of these far-flung areas.
